Biden’s Chief Economist Processes the Election With ‘Confusion, Guilt’ [NYTimes;11.23.24]

Sub-title:
“Jared Bernstein, the chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, was a leading architect of “Bidenomics.””

From the article: ““We get up every day and try to realize the president’s vision of helping the working class.” That sounds like a typical political talking point, but it was basically our agenda for four years.”

Biden was an economic populist president. He was from the working class and he dedicated his presidency to improving life for the average person and holding the big actors accountable for their out-sized prosperity. That’s the saddest part of this mess. We had a chance to capitalize on those successes and get to a more equitable place and, instead, threw the whole effort in the trash bin.

General’s promotion blocked in first sign of Trump retaliation for Afghanistan pullout [NBC_News;11.23.24]

This popped up in Apple News, which I’ve never signed up for but which feeds me a limited number of articles, nevertheless. I’m posting it because I’ve heard that one of t0000’s aims is to purge the military and replace the higher brass with t0000 loyalists (he once lamented that he didn’t have generals like hitler had - remember?). You know, our military pledges to preserve and protect the Constitution and not an individual.

United States Armed Forces oath of enlistment [Wikipedia;11.26.24]

And, here’s another reminder: t0000 negotiated w the Taliban without including the fledgling Afghan government, thereby undermining them. I think he even brought the Taliban to Camp David, which is reserved for special meetings w heads-of-state. [Oops. Just looked that up. My bad. He invited the Taliban to Camp David but then cancelled] - a digression but if you want to read about it: Yes, Donald Trump did invite the Taliban to Camp David while he was president [9News;9.13.24] . And!!! One week before Biden took office, t0000 completed a drawdown of troops such that only 2500 remained in all of Afghanistan, AFTER he’d signed an agreement to withdraw all US troops by some date in May 2021.

Pentagon says U.S. has dropped to 2,500 troops in Afghanistan [AP News;1.15.21]

You might call it a set-up.

It’s all so t0000ian. It’s crazy. It makes no sense, which, one suspects, is part of the point. And it’s part of the pretzel-twisting he engages in to hurt people to settle some personal score. My guess is that this step has very little to do with Afghanistan and a lot to do with his aim at re-making the military in his own image. And perhaps the start of a larger effort, we can only dimly imagine. That’s why I’m sticking a pin 📌 in it.

Owners in the affected industries favor tariffs, just so long as an exception is made for their type of business.

Inside The Last-Ditch Legislative Effort To Protect Journalists Before Trump Comes To Town [TPM;11.26.24]

From the article:
“In the lame duck session, the energy on Capitol Hill is busy and frazzled, as Democrats try to squeeze in any lingering priorities before they’re shut out of power for at least two years. Republicans are largely intent on blocking or slowing down those priorities, while members jockey for position in the new trifecta.

“Amid the frenzy, a bipartisan group — somewhat unusual in and of itself — is quietly making a longshot, eleventh-hour attempt to pass federal protections for journalists and other critics before President-Elect Donald Trump and his famously thin-skinned coterie take over.”

As you will see if you read the article, it’s unlikely the anti-SLAPP bills will pass. It’s an important effort anyway.

From the article:
“The legislation, a federal anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) bill, would help journalists and other critics dismiss frivolous lawsuits in federal court. Both Trump and his close advisors, including billionaire Elon Musk, have made liberal use of the kind of suit anti-SLAPP legislation would address; plaintiffs often file these suits without any hope of winning their cases, but aim to chill criticism, bury their critics in legal fees and force them to disclose sensitive information through discovery. ”

t0000’s busily filling out his cabinet picks. It’s been an impressive lineup of loyalists and the eminently unqualified, with sprinkles of criminality, a penchant for conspiratorial thinking, extreme wealth, and a healthy skepticism for science, plus sexual misconduct as an afterthought. Basically, a rogue’s gallery. Here’s an analysis from the NY Times on what connects them.

Project 2025, Mar-a-Lago and Fox News: What Connects Trump’s New Staff Picks [NYTimes;12.4.24]

Matt Gaetz for Attorney General is out. His selection (and resignation from Congress) actually appeared timed to coincide w and thus derail the release of results of a congressional investigation into his drug-filled dalliances with under-aged girls, for which his friend, not so advantageously-placed, is now serving time. There were so many reasons he was a bad pick for the job. But, that’s a feature of all the picks, not a bug.

To avoid making too much of the clown show that is t0000’s cabinet appointments (still to be confirmed, or not, by the Senate), I’m adding related content here, later down. So:

The above has some additional info about the architects of Project 2025 and provides useful links.

This is a long one - an episode of Political Beatdown, when Ben Meiselas and Michael Cohen carry on lively conversations about current events with a particular focus on d j t0000. Cohen, previously t0000’s personal lawyer and ‘fixer’, has a unique perspective on t0000.

They cover a lot of ground here, from t0000’s cabinet picks to Canada and Mexico, to Russia and China, to the presidential ‘pardon’ power. It’s long but pretty interesting, right through to the end.
