How long to we give the social media app before it is run completely into the ground - or - becomes the prime example (as if) for the government to finally regulate these hubs of misinformation and hate?

BREAKING NEWS

Hate speech on Twitter has jumped since Elon Musk took over, researchers found. Kanye West was suspended last night after posting a swastika.

The findings — from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, the Anti-Defamation League and other groups that study online platforms — provide the most comprehensive picture to date of how conversations on Twitter have changed since Mr. Musk acquired the site.
These changes are alarming, researchers said, adding that they had never seen such a sharp increase in hate speech, problematic content and formerly banned accounts in such a short period on a mainstream social media platform.

I appreciated this article and decided to share.

With Starlink, Elon Musk's Satellite Dominance Is Raising Global Alarms [7.28.23]

A second title of the same article: "Elon Musk's Unmatched Power in the Stars"

Since 2019, Mr. Musk has sent SpaceX rockets into space nearly every week that deliver dozens of sofa-size satellites into orbit. The satellites communicate with terminals on Earth, so they can beam high-speed internet to nearly every corner of the planet. Today, more than 4,500 Starlink satellites are in the skies, accounting for more than 50 percent of all active satellites. They have already started changing the complexion of the night sky, even before accounting for Mr. Musk’s plans to have as many as 42,000 satellites in orbit in the coming years.

I have installed a fair few of these in remote islands in Alaska and they are revolutionizing lives......i hate to say it but giving children access to the same learning as those in populated areas is life changing.
Agreed. I know you do good work. And, amazing that you've been involved in installing this technology where it can reach underserved populations. I appreciate being reminded of the good here when I may lean more towards the doom and gloom.

I think it makes sense to be concerned about one, or three (3 owners?), having that amount of power in their hands: the ability to rock the world with the flick of a switch, especially when one of the owners demonstrates a mercurial, unreliable persona.

I didn't know about these satellites, how they dominate the lower orbit, something I'd never heard about. I'd heard of Starlink, mainly in the context of Ukraine. Musk and Starlink have made it possible for Ukrainians to have continued access to the internet. Without that, then what?

Here's some more info about the satellites. I usually make an effort to check on the credibility of sources, which is hard when taking anything off the internet. Anyway, this article speculates about the impacts of increasing numbers of low satellites and also the impact of aluminum compound release as spent satellites burn upon re-entering the atmosphere.

DOnt get me wrong, Musk is a dick

Letter from Robert Reich:

How to stop Musk

I know the musk melon is a nefarious actor, with a child-like interest in destruction and his own power (despite spaceX and Tesla and starlink). I didn't know the details Reich recounts. I knew from the get-go that the rotten cucurbit was up to no good when he bought twitter. Are Reich's ideas workable as a stick to whack that bad melon?
