It’s too dang late for me to be posting this but I love this episode of The Coffee Klatch and want to put it out here before I lose track of it. . .
Why do so many Americans support a neofascist for president [The Coffee Klatch, Saturday, April 27, 2024]
This gives a historical perspective, reaching back to the period after WW II, when the American Dream was achievable (for some) to the present.
Of course, it also was back in April, when Joe Biden was the evident nominee for president on the Democratic ticket. That’s worth hearing too. Biden is consequential and this Coffee Klatch speculates about the transformations that might have emerged with a second term that will never be. Hopefully, Kamala Harris will have the opportunity to carry on this legacy, with her own take on it.
This past week, I saw a headline for an article in the NYTimes which bothered me because it spoke to the crushing pressure rich and powerful donors can exert.
Sidetrack to topics in the news now: They don’t want unions! They probably favor allowing the grocery store giants, Kroger and Albertsons, to merge, which would enable even greater opportunities for price gouging. I think that merger is being blocked. Now, I’m just guessing! Cuz
Anyway!!! Back from my digression to the article I mentioned (which better belongs over in the thread about the Harris campaign).
Donors Quietly Push Harris to Drop Tax on Ultra Wealthy [NYTimes; 8.29.24]
Subtitle: “Vice President Kamala Harris’ fundraising has benefitted from a surge of interest from Silicon Valley and Wall Street.”
I hope she is able to resist!!! She is coping with so much right now. The behind-the-scenes pressure from the rich and powerful must be an unwanted distraction.
Big money out of politics!!!
If you listen to the Coffee Klatch, you will hear a remark about Joe Biden’s cabinet. There was no representation of Wall Street. He is a populist. And would have probably worked hard to get big money out of politics in a 2nd term. Is that achievable? I don’t know. But Biden has accomplished some important legislation, like the Inflation Reduction Act. Robert Reich (who, along with Heather Lofthouse is the Coffee Klatch) mentions these achievements. Have a listen.!!!
