Purple and Black
Taking Independent and Unofficial Back

Popular Artists appeal who you never got?

Very light skinneded - its very hard to tell these days. She looks white. Black people are like the Maoris, one drop of blood and you are Black or maori nothing else - even if you are like 80 or 90% white - you are black only and its ultra racist nazism if dare deny it.

In this country we have sno white blonde haired women with blue eyes and thin lips getting Maori mokos (Chin tattoos) and foot sized tikis and all this other shit and us real Maoris are sick of it (I am Maori and White, but not just one - still JB is overrated and before my time).
She always “looked Black “ to me and all other Black Americans. We come all shades - thanks to racial mixing, often forced. I personally come from a family of various hues. In America, people with any amount of “Black blood “ are considered Black, especially since White people do not accept anyone with Black ancestry as “White “.

And James Brown can never be “overrated “. Interesting that artists that you love- like Michael Jackson and Prince- worshipped Brown for his artistry and performance skills (Go to YouTube and put in “James Brown TAMI Show “ to see JB in his 1964 glory). To be honest, MJ and Prince and others would not exist in the form they did WITHOUT Brown paving the way. And I personally can understand and love music from “before my time “- Basie and Ellington and Goodman and Billie Holliday and Hank Williams are still great no matter when they recorded.

Yeah... This is where I have to disagree with you on this hahaha. James Brown is on the mount Rushmore of black music period!

I would but Brown in the Pantheon of Popular music, as important as Ellington and Miles Davis and The Beatles and Bob Dylan

James Brown, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and The Family Stone and Nina Simone are the most important black artists of the last century and even this century IMO. Alongside with the jazz artist's you mentioned too

Really all the white people I know are the opposite, they are always extolling my white side and trying to make me white and forget that I have any Maori blood as they associate Maoris with crime, poverty, violence, stupidity and whinging. It makes me angry as its just proof people are racist if they want you to be an actor in some white Valhalla/Herrenvolk fantasy they have. It is like the handful of fans who thought Prince was white as he did not act or sound like typical "black people" - ie not ghetto or loud. This died out in the 2000s when Prince went even more pro Black, but the 80s and 90s when his skin was real pale and he was doing more rock and techno rather than soul and RB music.

TTD/Sananda is worse, he is claiming he is Irish rather than Black now. He is married to an Italian and lives there and lives this "I'm too good to be Black fantasy" - he had an album called Niggamortis!

Passing is big here, and I get confused as many Maori and Polynesians call me white or think I am a sellout and I know a lot of light skinned people there are harassed like that too, yet many Whites accept them at least as an "Honorary white".

I agree James Brown's importance can not be denied, his success and acclaim amongst many is undeniable, but like Elvis, it does not mean I have to like him.

America is a different country, with a different culture, and a different caste system. Here, anyone with Black ancestry is considered Black, or maybe Bi-racial. You have to be 100% White to be accepted as White. People used to PASS as "White" years ago, if they looked European enough, but that meant cutting all connections to the Black community, even disassociating from your own family members who appeared "Blacker". The Black community generally accepted people of varying shades and appearances with one important "rule"- the lighter skinned or more European looking members could not attack or act superior to those who looked what is believed to be more traditionally "Black". Often, lighter skinned Blacks like Lena Horne and Harry Belafonte were the most vociferous Civil Rights advocates. Go Google Adam Clayton Powell to see what one of America's first Black Congressmen looked like, or Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice. These were fierce fighters for racial equality and Black empowerment. Often , lighter complexioned Blacks were more "acceptable" to the greater White populace, but they were never accepted AS "White"....Ok , history lesson over.

As for James Brown, like any artist , nobody is forcing anyone to like or not their music or performances. What I have seen here is people putting Brown into context, and explaining his importance in American (and world actually) music and culture. And to dismiss something just because it's "before their time" is a little silly...I mean, Bach and Mozart are technically "before my time", but I wouldn't dismiss them for that reason

Over on the other site, someone started a thread about Elvis calling him a "thief of black music" and because of that had no "Talent of his own"...in other words, the usual blather. Only that Micky Dolenz guy seems to have a grasp of music history and culture, and provided an excellent defense.

Elvis is no longer a "mere " musician- instead he is now a SYMBOL, a whipping boy for not only the racism in the music business, but all racism in society. He's become a pinata for some to beat, to get out their frustrations over all the fucked up things in this society. It's like the guy who gets abused at work, and comes home and slaps around his wife and kids...they need an outlet , someone to vent against

The Prince org forum is filled with cringefest kids who are obsessed with their parents era of music and bashes every single artists and bands on this earth and talks about some of the strangest shit ever. The sub are musically illiterate.

Let's not refer to that thread when discussing music🤣 @Jjhunsecker hahaha.

I will give credit to that Micky Dolenz dude- he’s one of the very few over there who has any knowledge of music history and culture

As much as I love Sly and The Family Stone, I do not like their 70s music. To me their golden era were the 60s. Dance To The Music - The 3 singles in 1969 was fantastic. The band wasn't so fucked up then too haha. So for that. I'll also give them a 9.

Dionne Warwick, I give her a 9. Her peak from 1964-1973. Fantastic, but sometimes her songs were a little too 1 dimensional but her vocals back then were incredible and she was a fantastic performer then too.

Have you ever watched this guy Rick Beato on YouTube? He often has different music lists, and then he has episodes called “What Makes this Song Great?” where he analyzes a single song for like 15-30 minutes. Fascinating for music junkies
oh yeah, Beato is damn cool, great videos there
also when he listens to and comments on the current Top 10, and NOT bashes every new song automatically just because it's new

I especially loved that piece he did on "Never Gonnna Let You Go"
pretty eye-openening on how that easy-listening melody is outragously complex underneath the catchy surface

@Jjhunsecker I'm learning more about Elvis. I didn't know he was called an N lover back in the day
not an expert on Elvis but I have 2 or 3 CDs and quite like some of his stuff
and yeah, I don't think he deserves to be tagged as as racist like some still do, cause this appears to be far from the truth

to me "Fiight The Power" by Public Enemy is one of the best tracks ever put on wax, but that line about Elvis did not age well and it makes me cringe everytime I hear that song

Yeah, that line from Chuck D was a joke. I may bash Elvis (mainly for his music) but he was never a racist, not one bit according to many black people who knew him, James Brown, Little Richard, BB King, Muhammad Ali etc.

The saddest part about Chuck D is that he still doesn't want to admit he was wrong. Now he uses the "why was he called the king" bullshit as his next excuse.

Elvis was perceived by many ignorant people as what would happen if the different races socialized- that White people would get too enamored of Black culture, and would no longer “be White anymore “
