Popular Artists appeal who you never got?

not an expert on Elvis but I have 2 or 3 CDs and quite like some of his stuff
and yeah, I don't think he deserves to be tagged as as racist like some still do, cause this appears to be far from the truth

to me "Fiight The Power" by Public Enemy is one of the best tracks ever put on wax, but that line about Elvis did not age well and it makes me cringe everytime I hear that song
Chuck D says now that he considers Elvis a great artist, and that his comment was really about how society elevated White artists and downplayed non White artists. On that position, I basically agree with him. But too many people ran with that, and made it into “Elvis had no talent and just stole everything from the Blacks “, which is absurd.
At this point, it’s no longer about MUSIC but about GRIEVANCES

As much as I love Sly and The Family Stone, I do not like their 70s music. To me their golden era were the 60s. Dance To The Music - The 3 singles in 1969 was fantastic. The band wasn't so fucked up then too haha. So for that. I'll also give them a 9.

Dionne Warwick, I give her a 9. Her peak from 1964-1973. Fantastic, but sometimes her songs were a little too 1 dimensional but her vocals back then were incredible and she was a fantastic performer then too.
With Sly, I’ll always consider 1971 album “There’s a Riot Going On” to be his best work, even though it’s a hell of a downer in many ways

Oh bullshit, Chuck D's same excuse now and has been for a long time is "why was he considered the king" and then he mentions other black artists like Little Richard, Fats Domino etc when it comes to discussion that hip hop song from 88

Chuck D is full of shit

I consider it a very flippant lyric that took on massive and unwarranted significance.

Like I said, we can discuss racism in the music industry and in society, and we can discuss the talents of specific artists, but for me at least, these are two completely separate discussions

Is all the Chuck D stuff because of the 1989/1990 song "Fight the Power", which in Chuck D says "Elvis was a hero to most, elvis was a hero to most" and some other shit I can't understand and then Flavor Flav says "Motherfuck his time range?".

That album was meant to be provocative - but fuck it was great, 911 is a joke, I can't do nuttin for you man, Polly wanna cracker etc - classics and conscious rap to boot.
PE at their best.

A year later - warming to Elvis a bit and discovering JB - yes he was great and I can see that influence - all his music was just funky and he made his bands work - they played their asses off.

People change when they open their eyes - I agree Prince, MJ and a lot of young cats would not be around if it wasn't for JB.

Here's the actual lyrics :

Elvis was a hero to most
Elvis was a hero to most
Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother fuck- him and John Wayne

Interestingly, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, in recent years Chuck D has said that he considers Elvis Presley to be a great artist, and that his lyrics were really about how White supremacy elevated someone like Elvis over Black artists. I agree with his overall point , but think those lyrics do not really express what he thinks he is trying to say, and instead turns Elvis into a symbol of racism in America when the reality was much more complex

And glad to see that you're expanding your horizons 👍Always great to try new things

I really really can't understand the rap and ebonics accent. How the fuck does the lyric - Motherfuck him and John wayne become "Mother fuck him and his time range" to my hearing impaired ass? - I should change my handle to "Mon De Green".

Chuck D was wrong, plain and simple... Now he has new reason as to why he said it. Can't take him seriously

Then again, we are talking about working class people raised in a ghetto, they are hardly ivy league graduates or educational geniuses. They are barely literate buffoons speaking a slurred and debased form of English.

Rather than beat myself up, why not force these people to speak intelligible English instead of this babble these rappers have like mumble rappers. Soon it will be grunting like death metallers.

Meanwhile, why is Taylor swift being promoted as the most famous celebrity in the galaxy at the moment, it is like she is invincible or something - she is a very average performer at best and her songs are corny and generic.

Same for Meghan Trainor - her songs are boring and stupid - Mother, I mean really - do people just like her, because shes a bit fat or something and its be nice to curvy girls or something?

Just an FYI-Actually Chuck D was raised in Long Island, which is a suburb of New York City and not the ghetto at all. And he got into music making at college (not sure if he graduated but he certainly was there for a few years at least).

I think it was a very flippant lyric that too many people took seriously

(Though the part about John Wayne was pretty accurate, since Wayne said in 1971 that he supported White Supremacy)

Yeah I agree, Chuck was young and angry when he sang those lines, as people age they mellow and think about shit they say as a young hothead. I know I have, some of the bullshit I said on the org years ago - damn!

It was mainly Flav's voice I couldn't understand, Chuck was fine.

Never liked John Wayne, Charlton Heston, any of those types of guys - we don't worship guns and masculinity as much as America. I mean as a gay man of colour who loves peace, hates gun violence - I could never align with someone like John Wayne anyway.

John Wayne is a perfect example of someone who was very good on screen and made some great movies, but was an asshole in real life

Have to mention again - Taylor Swift. Seriously what is so great about this girl - her voice is winy, her music generic and it seems to drive gays and young girls crazy.

Its everywhere now, as she plays Australia, Kiwi Swifties whinge about being snubbed (A NZ show was turned down due to noise requirements - no loud noise after 10.30pm) and yet they are flying to Australia to see the whiny bitch.

GOD I hate fu#king Taylor Swift.

Only good thing, is she does actually do some real music and theres no rap or shit hop of any kind in it (Apart from crap off her Reputation album).

I never got Harry styles, Lady Gaga, Drake, Bruno Mars , Nirvana ,Usher. Justin Beiber, Justin Timberlake , Neyo can probably go on that list ... & I didn't like BritPop, or Grunge so if i'm honest not too much Pearl Jam thankyou 🤣& there is more.
