Russia Launches Military Action in Ukraine

Snake Island defenders "alive and well," Ukrainian Navy says

From CNN's Seb Shukla in Kyiv

The defenders of Snake Island in the Black Sea, who were initially feared dead, are “alive and well,” according to the Ukrainian Navy.
On Monday, a statement from the Navy said that the soldiers on the island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, repelled two attacks by Russian forces but in the end were forced to surrender “due to the lack of ammunition.”
The statement went on to say that Russian forces have completely destroyed the islands infrastructure: lighthouses, towers and antennas.
Over the weekend, the Ukrainian Border Guard Service said they had received information that all 82 soldiers may be alive.
Russian state media also showed the arrival of the Ukrainian soldiers in Sevastopol, Crimea, where they are being held.
More background: Snake Island sits about 30 miles (48 kilometers) off the southern tip of the Ukrainian mainland in the northwestern Black Sea. It's about 185 miles (300 kilometers) west of Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russia annexed in 2014.
Though it is only about 46 acres (18 hectares) in size, a report last year from the non-partisan Atlantic Council think tank called it "key to Ukraine's maritime territorial claims" in the Black Sea.

I read somewhere they may have been taken as POWs. There's an audio tape of a man and a woman there telling Russia to fuck off after they demanded surrender over the radio.

They were forced to surrender, so yes, they would be POWs. But it was first assumed that everyone on the island had been killed.

Ukraine Library Association concerning the cancellation of their forthcoming conference. it basically says "We will reschedule just as soon as we have finished vanquishing our invaders".

I hear the EU closed ALL air space - commercial and military - to Russia - the EU is bonding together strongly - which is is his worst nightmare. He's insane!

I'm still disappointed at how slow germany did react to this cowardly attack on the ukraine. It just shows how depended we are from russia's gas. Time to end the partnership with them for good. The netherlands got gas too. We don't need Putin. I also hope he gets kicked out of the kreml before he gets the idea to really launch his nukes. I don't about the rest here, but he appears like a maniac who's ready to take the world with him if he's cornered enough.

I thought Germany was sending weapons to Ukraine?

I thought Germany was sending weapons to Ukraine?
yeah, they do now. but they had to be pressured into doing it. They also had to be pressured into kicking russia out of the SWIFT program. They were waiting for days until they decided to do all this. Some reporters even said that some weapons might arrive too late now. The "funniest" thing are the 5000 helmets they sent over even before Putin attacked. They only arrived recently, too. People were arguing that sending weapons might start WW3.

I have to thank you for your posts, because we're not hearing this in the UK. I've just checked the major news channels and..zero. Also about the EU no fly zone (thanks Dimi). The UK has refused to implement a no fly zone (as have the US as I understand it). There was an emotional encounter about our lack of action at this morning's press conference (see tweet). Our government are weak and feeble and increasingly unable to justify themselves at the min.
